Reno Air Races
2002

These are pictures I took at the 2002 Reno Air Races

Race Photos - my cheap disposable camera didn't do a very good job of capturing these photos, since it didn't have a zoom but if you look closely, you can see the planes.

Rare Bear - note the amazing width of those propeller blades. Rare Bear didn't get to race due to a mechanical problem.

Dago Red - Always a crowd favorite, Dago Red took first place in the unlimited class. This plane pushes 490 MPH!

Voodoo - Maybe not first place, but quite an incredible paint job.

I asked a pit crew member of P51 racer "Old Yeller" to take my camera and snap some photos inside the cockpit for me. The pictures turned out great!

Most crews had a spare engine ready in case they blew one during a race. These amazing pit crews can swap out a racing engine overnight and be ready to fly again the following day!

J39 Jet Racers - J39 Albatross jets built in the Soviet Union during the 1980's, and sold as surplus. These jets are fast and quiet.

F104 Starfighters - Fastest airshow performers in the world, this pair of F104s are fast and LOUD!

Heritage Formation - The heritage formation consisted of an F16, a P38, and two P51s flying in formation... a pretty cool sight you don't see every day.

While wandering the airport, I spotted a few interesting things
Frankenplane From the I-wonder-if-it-flys department, this appears to be a hybrid of several different planes. That V-tail is constructed of two identical vertical stabilizers from something else.

MIG-15s As I wandered to the far end of the airport, I spotted these MIG-15s sitting in storage. Four are visible in the picture, and there were several more to the right of this photo. Its fascinating to wonder who owns all these, and what their plans are for the future

What happens when a jet mechanic has too much time on his hands? THIS. A turbine powered motorcycle.

If you didn't hear about the fatal crash during the Sport class races, there was one pilot who had a structural faliure during the race and died instantly on impact. These are some photos of the plane he was flying. (I didn't take these, they were snagged from a different site.)

I have a picture of the wreckage from the local Reno newspaper I will scan in and post here when I get a chance.

Overall, I had a blast at the airshow, and I look forward to going again next year. One thing that I plan on doing differently is to buy a program early and read about the different pilots who are racing so I know who to root for.
